What Is a Bidet?
A bidet is a basin that provides water sprays for cleaning your nether regions after you poop. They are commonplace in many parts of Asia, Europe and South America, and seem to be gaining popularity here in the US as well. They can certainly be more sanitary than toilet paper, which has been shown to carry bacteria and debris in and around the anal area.
Bidets can be used alone or in conjunction with a wad of toilet paper. They come in a variety of styles and designs. Some have a nozzle that can be adjusted to direct the stream of water upwards or downwards. The aim is to wash the anal and genital areas in a way that is gentler than wiping with toilet paper, which can be irritating. The nozzles can also be used to clean the thighs, buttocks and rear-end.
They can be powered by electricity or just use water pressure like a faucet. Some have a built-in air dryer, and some provide a towel hook. Some can be controlled by a remote, while others have buttons or levers on the toilet. In either case, they work through the use of pulses of invisible light to send signals to a microprocessor inside the bidet that activate various controls.
Whether you have an electronic or mechanical add-on bidet, it is usually easy to use. Once the water supply is turned on, press the button and a nozzle will appear beneath you. When you’re finished, press the "Stop" button and the nozzle will retract into the attachment or the toilet seat. Some bidets have a remote control that lets you set the temperature and flow of the water, while others have touch-sensitive sensors on the toilet or a panel that you can operate with your hand.
If you decide to buy a bidet, you’ll need to have an existing toilet to attach it to. You’ll also need a diversion pipe to switch over from your toilet’s water supply to the new one. Depending on the brand and model, the installation may be relatively simple or involve professional plumbing. It’s important to keep in mind that the nozzle and attachment will need regular cleaning to avoid clogs. You can easily clean them by disconnecting them and soaking the nozzle in vinegar.
Health Safety
A main reason for the growing popularity of bidets is their ability to offer a touch-free alternative to toilet paper, which has been shown to spread germs. The spray from a bidet can also be gentler on the genitals and anus, and may help to prevent sores. But it’s still important to cleanse those areas with a washcloth or towel.
Another benefit is that bidets can reduce the amount of toilet paper needed, resulting in lower landfill waste. Plus, they can be more hygienic than wipes and are particularly helpful in reducing the risk of infection during a pandemic. However, they’re not without their critics, who have raised concerns about their water usage. According to Coco bidet maker Biolife Technologies, a single bidet wash uses about an eighth of a gallon of water—significantly less than the four gallons needed for a toilet flush.
